Department of Mathematics & Computer Science

Mathematics, Computer Science

Philosophy, Aims and Objectives of the Degree Programme

To instil in students a sense of enthusiasm for mathematics, an appreciation of its application in different areas and to involve them in an intellectually stimulating and satisfying experience of learning and studying.

To provide students a broad and balanced foundation in mathematics knowledge and practical skills in statistics and computer science.

To develop in students the ability to apply their mathematics knowledge and skills to the solution of theoretical and practical problems in mathematics

To develop in students, through an education in mathematics, a range of transferable skills of value in mathematical related and non-mathematical related employment.

To provide students with knowledge and skills base from which they can proceed to further studies in specialized areas of mathematics or multi-disciplinary areas involving mathematics.

To generate in students an appreciation of the importance of mathematics in an industrial, economic, environmental and social context.

Admission and Graduation Requirement

The entry requirements shall be at least credit level passes in five subjects including English Language, Mathematics, Physics to form the core subjects with credit in any other two relevant science subjects at the Senior Secondary School Certificate or its equivalent. In addition, an acceptable pass in the University.

Candidates with two A level passes (graded A-E) at the Advanced Level in one or more relevant subjects (Mathematics, Further Mathematics ,Physics and Chemistry) may undertake the three – year degree programme into 200-level.

The Department also offers a four–year’s degree program leading to the award of Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Computer Science. The first two years of the program are devoted to exposing the students to the fundamentals and basic principles of Mathematics, Statistics and scientific Computing.

Mathematical Sciences are tools used in striving to understand the abstract inherent in the real world. The world currently cannot easily be understood fully or studied by mere physical observations or the usage of equipments. The advent of Scientific, Numerical and Statistical Computing has enhanced the use of Mathematics and Statistics in scientific studies. The Department of Mathematical Sciences strives to provide courses in Mathematics and Statistics which are oriented towards application and service to the citizens of nations. The programmes run in the Department are intended to educate the people in the current procedures of scientific research which entails multi-disciplinary approach and in most cases involve the use of mathematical tools.

Major Aims and Objective of the Degree Programmes

The aims and objectives of the Bachelor honours degree programmes in Computational Sciences include:

(i) To instill in students, a sense of enthusiasm for Mathematical Sciences, an appreciation of its application in different areas and involving them in intellectually stimulating and satisfying experience of learning and studying.

(ii) To develop in students through education in scientific software’s, a range of applicable and transferable skills in Mathematical computation to all aspects of human Endeavour.

(iii) To develop in students, the ability to apply their Mathematical/Statistical knowledge and skills to solving real life problems.

(iv) To generate in students, an appreciation and application of Mathematical Sciences skill in an industrial, economic, technological and social context:

(v) To train professional Mathematicians and Statisticians to reason rigorously and logically, as well as to be objective and analytical. This can easily make our graduates branch out to be successful in business, engineering or in the financial sector.

(vi) To train graduates who are exceptional in the use of modern Mathematical and Statistical software’s, and program design & analysis

Upon completion of the programme, the graduate should

(i) have an understanding of the business environment and be able to enhance optimum utilization of scarce resources in the business environment in which they operate

(ii) be able to model business operations and solve business/associated problems

(iii) be able to select and apply appropriate mathematical/statistical methods and techniques to solve real life problem

(iv) make meaningful contribution to team research efforts

(v) be able to present and communicate academic/professional work effectively

The department places special emphasis on the Practicals, projects and industrial attachment for all the Students in general and Statistics and Computer science students in particular.

Students are admitted into the Department through; (i) University Matriculation Examination (UME) and (ii) The Remedial Programme of Anchor University.
